Understanding Mailchimp Pricing

Date: October 2020

Mailchimp has introduced a range of flexible pricing plans. The email marketing platform has always been known for offering a lot for free. There is still a free plan, but this option now has limited functionality before you need to start paying.

‘Seats’ – what do they mean?

Seats are the available number of individual users who have access to your account. The number and access level is determined by what plan you are on.

Admin Access

If you’re used to being able to make someone an admin in the free version, unfortunately you now can’t. The way to get around this if you’re on the free plan, is by giving your login details to someone but remember not to do this via email for security reasons.

Additional charges

Mailchimp’s monthly plans come with the set amount of contacts and email sends per pricing tier, which is shown above. If you exceed the limit of the plan, they won’t stop a campaign being sent or interrupt the service they provide. Instead, they will add an additional charge on your monthly bill. These are called ‘Additional Contact Blocks’.

How the additional charge works?

When deciding your pricing plan, you’ll decide how many contacts you want to have/store in Mailchimp (archived and cleaned contacts don’t count towards total, but unsubscribed contacts do).

This add on contact block charge is assessed month-by-month, based on your billing cycle.

The price of the add-on contact block, and the number of contacts and email sends it includes, depends on your plan and pricing tier. When you’re logged into your Mailchimp account, you can set the maximum contact count for your plan, see how many contacts and email sends are included, as well as the price and size of add-on contact blocks.

The price of the add-on contact block starts at $4.99. Read more about the pricing of add-on contacts blocks.

Pay as you go payment method

That phrase is a bit of a throwback, isn’t it?! If you don’t want the monthly commitment and send infrequent emails, this option is just right for your business.

What you get

An email builder that makes it easy to create campaigns, plus, advanced features like A/B testing and automations.

How it works

In your account settings select ‘billing’ and then you select ‘Monthly Plans’ and ‘Credits’.

You can then choose how many credits you want. Each email you send costs one credit.

Rates for Charities and Non-profits

Mailchimp offers a 15% discount to non-profits and charities. To request the discount, sign up for a free account, and contact Mailchimp’s billing team with your username and a link to your organisation’s website.

Two-factor authentication discount

Setting up two-factor authentication will keep your account extra secure and you’ll also receive a discount of 10% for 3 months. Two-factor authentication means that you’ll need two forms of identification to log into your Mailchimp account – your login credentials and a unique passcode generated by a two-factor authentication app.

Two-factor authentication adds an extra step to your Mailchimp login process, but the security benefits make it worthwhile. And then there’s the discount too!

For more information and how to set it up visit Mailchimp’s blog.

What plan or option is right for me?

You don’t want to be overpaying for a plan if you’re not using the functionality. So ensure you’re on the right plan for your business. Mailchimp easily allows you to change plans within your account settings.

Go through each payment plan and see which one is suitable for your business.
