Quick Guide on Creating a Zoom Virtual Background

Date: 21 May 2020

We’ve seen some brilliant virtual backgrounds on Zoom recently. Have you? From branded wallpaper to beach scenes, virtual backgrounds make you stand out. And let’s face it, they also hide that pile of clutter you’ve been meaning to clear up and anything (or anyone) else unexpected popping up in the background…

So here’s our quick guide on creating your Zoom background:

šŸ§” Choose an image that’s landscape (an image of 1280 pixels by 720 px or 1920 pixels by 1080 pixels would work well) and that doesn’t have too much writing on it. You don’t want it to be too distracting for your Zoom guests. Alternatively you could create something in Canva.com with your branding and colours. When your image is ready, you can now upload it to Zoom…

šŸ§” To change your virtual background on a desktop, open up Zoom and login. Click on the gear icon in the top right hand side to get to the settings. On the left hand menu, click on ‘Virtual Background’ and click on the + icon to upload your image. You’ll get a preview of what it looks like before you save.

šŸ§” On the mobile app, log into your account and join a meeting, tap the three dots at the bottom right of the screen to open the More menu. Tap Virtual Background. Select a background from the default options, or upload your own.

šŸ§” Another top tip – you can also add a ‘beauty filter’ which automatically touches up your appearance (life saver!). To do this, when in a meeting, click on the upwards arrow next to start/stop video and click on ‘Video Settings’. Tick the box for ‘Touch up my appearance’. And voila šŸ˜‰

Please note that virtual backgrounds are not accessible for all devices. Here’s Zoom’s article on system requirements for virtual backgrounds: https://support.zoom.us/hc/en-us/articles/360043484511. Of course, if you find your machine is not able to cater for virtual backgrounds, you could always use a pop up banner to look smart!

Hope that helps… Happy Zooming
